Happy 'Snake' Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is around the corner. It's just 2 days away from now. Many people have taken their leaves today, makes offices, MRT, and buses emptier.

The above was the article taken from My Paper daily bi-lingual newspaper published today, regarding the hong bao. Hong bao (in Chinese) means red packet. On the New Year day, usually people will have family gathering included all family members and relatives. In Singapore itself, people will bring two pieces of Mandarin oranges, to be given to the family they visit, and they will be given it back before going back home, as Mandarin oranges implying 'da ji da li', means abundance of luck and great prosperity.

People will greet 'Gong Xi Fa Cai' plus other positive words to wish the other parties. E.g. Shen ti jian kang, wan shi ru yi, means hope you have a good health and all things will go smoothly.

For married couple, they will give 'hong bao' to children and single (sometimes adult single may receive one as well, as a symbol of luck). So the hong bao mentioned in the article above, means red packet, filled with money. Hope the article can be read clearly.

It is a big festive in Singapore, as majority of Singaporean are Chinese. During the first two days, usually offices, shops, are all closed, not opened for business. There is a belief that it's better not to work on the first day, as it's a day for celebration and receiving good luck. So, the night before, the wet market will open until morning time and it is the time where Singaporean purchase their food stock for the first few days of the New Year. Shopping mall will usually close too, and open only for fast food restaurant, where its workers are usually from the other races. That's the only place that might be available for food, or some other Indian or Malay food stalls.

When visiting relative house, the host will usually prepare the Chinese New Year snacks and tidbits, which usually consists of: bak kwa (Chinese salty-sweet dried meat similar to jerky), pineapple tarts (symbolises prosperity and good luck) - or called Huang Li (in Mandarin) or Ong Lai (in Hokkian), variety of can or boxed drinks (including beer), etc.

Below is another article, also taken from today edition of My Paper.

Sometimes, the host will serve lunch or dinner. It depends. Some will serve variety of Chinese dishes, and some will serve steamboat. Steamboat is usually more common to have during the Chinese New Year's Eve, where family members will sit around table together and have the food from the same pot shared to feel the closeness and the warmth feeling of the families.

Below is the sample photo of the steamboat.

This year, I'll have a reunion dinner at home, steamboat. But the next day I'll fly to 'City of Joy' - as per what my friend has told me - Calcutta, India. So, I would like to wish everyone 'Gong Xi Fa Cai! Xin Nian Kuai Le, Shen Ti Jian Kang, Wan Shi Ru Yi. Tian Tian Kuai Le, Huat ahhhhh!!!!!

And below is my first Hong Bao received from the company where I work, complete with 4D number that I'm going to buy now. Haha... wish me luck OK? Huat ahhh!!!! Happy Chinese New Year everyone!!! :)

A Scent of Impermanence

All compounded things are impermanent.
All emotions are pain.
All things have no inherent existence.
Nirvana is beyond concepts.

- Siddharta Gautama (Buddha) - The Four Seals of Dharma

If you cannot accept that all compounded or fabricated things are impermanent, if you believe that there is some essential substance or concept that is permanent, then you are not a Buddhist.

If you cannot accept that all emotions are pain, if you believe that actually some emotions are purely pleasurable, then you are not a Buddhist.

If you cannot accept that all phenomena are illusory and empty, if you believe that certain things do exist inherently, then you are not a Buddhist.

And if you think that enlightenment exists within the spheres of time, space, and power, then you are not a Buddhist.

Usually at this time, people will buy some beautiful flowers to be put in their house as usually there will be family gathering and people will be visiting their house. Spring is coming too. Four of them with beautiful flowers :)

Apart from that, my brother-in-law is a very hardworking and responsible husband :) Every year without fail, he would buy and grow the plants, and put it nicely in a vase, then sell it out to earn additional income. It is one of his hobbies. The plant name is Angel Flower or Shui Xian Hua in Cantonese. It presents beautiful flowers and fragrance after two weeks. The meaning of having this flower is that everything will get better, such as better career, better salary, better luck, etc.

Bro-in-law was decorating the flowers nicely :)

Beautiful plant with beautiful meaning :)

That is how it looks like when flowers have bloomed :)

The Happiness Project

If people ask you 'What is your purpose in life?', and you have to answer it immediately, what would be your answer???

I once answered, 'To be happy.' - Simple and short.

But if you ask me this question again, my answer would be slightly different now.

I will answer, 'To make others and myself happy.'

When I purchased my new toys, I wrote the gift message for myself, which was shown above. My hubby saw it and he told me, 'Why are you so selfish? To love yourself more? I've given my love for you.' Maybe what he meant was that I should write 'To love my husband more.' Hehehe.. But if I wrote that, it would mean I don't love him enough, that's why I need to love him more. Right?

Why I wrote 'to love myself more'? Because I think I've loved others much more than I love myself. It's more like, I didn't pamper myself enough. Hehe.. Like most of the time, what my son wants, I'd buy it for him without thinking much. But what I want, I've to think over it again, whether I need it or not? Is the time right? Do I really need it? And so on. At the end, lots of time I just forget it.

The Happiness Project - A Five-Year Record

Alright! Aside from that, the title of this post is 'The Happiness Project'. Despite busy from month-end closing, I went to bookshop during my lunch time yesterday. I browsed the shelf and found a small but thick book above. It was wrapped in plastic so I had no idea how it looked inside. To satisfy my curiosity, I purchased the book. Anyway, if it's a kind of journal, I would have no problem in using it. Once reached office, I tore the plastic and this is how it looked inside.

Inside the book
WHY I KEEP A ONE-SENTENCE JOURNAL

Several years ago, I became alarmed by how little I remembered from my own past, so I looked for a realistic way to keep a colorful record of my life. Because keeping a proper journal seemed far too daunting. I decided instead to keep a one-sentence journal.

Every night, I just write one sentence. And now I've kept my journal for several years, I know that one sentence is indeed enough to keep memories vivid. A one-sentence journal is very satisfying: it's manageable so it doesn't feel like a burden; it gives me the feeling of accomplishment and growth that's so important to happiness; it helps me to recall happy moments; and it gives me a reason to reflect on my experiences in a loving and grateful way.

We tend to overestimate what can be done in short term, and underestimate what can be done in the long term, a little bit at a time. Writing one sentence a day sounds easy, and it is; at the end of the year, it adds up to a marvelous record.

-Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project

So, there was the opening words of the journal. The rest, it was as per shown above. Each day, there is different quote related to happiness. If you notice, the year was kept blank. So you have to fill up the blank based on which year you write the journal and this can be used for up to 5 years and more.

The author has written books, such as The Happiness Project and Happier at Home. I've just bought The Happiness Project this afternoon. I guess I would have to read it first, then to write in the one-sentence journal.

Actually, I know that happiness can't just be found by reading book, but live in it. However, just wonder what she wrote and it would add my knowledge.

Just add on, I am so glad that I've back to read more books nowadays. Now I'm still reading The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami. It has a very nice and smooth stories, brings you to different feelings and emotions. At first, I thought it would be a challenge to read such a thick book, but I was wrong. It is really good. And you know what? Today I found 1Q84 in the library. It's even thicker than The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. Hahaha.... We'll see if I have enough time to read it within 3 weeks. Hope the story will be good too...

Well, happy weekend everyone! Hope you had a great time too!!!
